In Year 4 at Gulf English School we aim to provide the children we teach with interesting and engaging lessons and learning opportunities, which help them to develop academically and socially. Lots of the lessons we teach are cross curricular. This means we aim to incorporate a range of subjects into one lesson. We feel this helps us deliver a rich curriculum, which builds on children’s previous learning, as well as preparing the children for their studies in the years ahead. We endeavourer to help the children we teach to become independent thinkers and learners. We also place great importance on providing opportunities to help children enhance their skills of working effectively as a team. By giving the children the chance to learn collaboratively, we hope that they can really enhance their skills of working effectively with others.

ENGLISH

Writing
The children are taught how to write in a variety of styles: stories, reports, diaries, instructions, recounts and letters. At the end of each month the children’s writing is formally assessed by his or her teacher, using the same leveling criteria as used in England. Children will complete grammar and punctuation exercises on a regular basis to help them improve their writing structure and orgainsation. The school uses and teaches the children handwriting in accordance with the Nelson Handwriting Scheme.
Comprehension
The children will be expected to read and comprehend a wide variety of texts over the year.
Reading
The children will be expected to be reading books from The Oxford Reading Tree scheme and the Junior Library. The children are also expected to read at home each day.
Speaking and Listening Skills
The children are expected to listen carefully to their teachers and each other. They are also expected to contribute to discussions in lessons.
MATHS
Mathematics is taught in accordance with the English National Curriculum. Children will complete a range of oral work in the classroom, textbook activities and problem solving tasks. Support and extension work is provided for those children who require it. We aim to use a range of techniques to improve children’s understanding and ability to apply mathematics.

MENTAL MATHS

SCIENCE

The Science curriculum has been designed to introduce students to the core elements of the subject. Integrated into every unit is ‘Experimental and Investigative Science,’ where students are encouraged to question the world around them and they are able to plan, predict, carry out and record investigations. The units of study are as follows:
  • Habitats
  • Moving and Growing
  • Solids, liquids and how they can be separated
  • Keeping Warm
  • Friction
  • Circuits and Conductors
TOPIC
HISTORY/GEOGRAPHY/PYISICAL SOCIAL AND HEALTH EDUCTION

Lots of the work we do in Topic lessons is cross curricular, where children have the opportunity to not only develop their general knowledge but also improve their skills in a number of aspects, using an interesting context as the starting point for a lesson. The topics studied through the year are:
  • Respect, Responsibility and Relationships – The topic deals with getting on well with others, bullying and how to solve issues with other people in a calm and sensible manner.
  • Flight – A study of the history of flight and how flight (human and animal) has developed over time.
  • The Titanic – A look at how the ship was made, the passengers and the events which led to its sinking.
  • Water – This topic includes knowledge of the water cycle, the importance of water, its main uses and a fundraising project for a water charity.
  • Ancient Egypt – Key events from this era will be studied and children will have the opportunity to conduct their own research.
MUSIC/INFORMATION COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY/ART/PHYSICAL EDUCTAION

  • In music classes the children are engaged in a course of listening, appreciation, composing and performance.
  • The children use a wide range of ICT tools and information sources to support their work in other subjects. The children will become increasingly familiar with common applications, such as word processing, spreadsheets and databases.
  • The children use drawing, painting, printing, collage and 3 dimensional work in Art lessons to produce a range of interesting pieces.
  • In Physical Education lessons the children are actively encouraged to develop their skills in a range of different sports. Team building games form a large part of lessons and the children also have the chance to improve their swimming ability.
HOMEWORK
In Year 4 children will be given approximately 40 minutes English or Maths homework, as well as 20 minutes Reading homework to support the learning completed in the classroom.
WHAT YOUR CHILD NEEDS IN SCHOOL EVERY DAY
Pencils, an eraser, a pencil sharpener, a 30cm ruler, a pair of scissors, a glue stick, a set of highlighter pens and two A4 size plastic holders for homework books and library books.
